Locking serged seam ends

I sometimes visit the forums on Oliver + S’s site. In fact it is where I met my circle of awesome sewing friends from around the world.

When I visited today someone asked how you lock the thread after you serge a seam and I replied with my method but then figured I should just post it here. With pictures.

I have to admit I don’t always do it this way. Ain’t no body got time for that. If a seam is going to be sewn over with another seam I pretty much always just cut the tail from the serger off.

But sometimes you really need to lock it in and this is how I usually do it.

Leave a long tail after you finished serging. Just let it run for a couple of inches before you cut the tail off with the serger’s knife. Thread the tail on a blunt needle with a big eye, I usually call it a darning needle but YMMV.

Weave the tail back on itself on the wrong side of the seam allowance for an inch or so. Pull the needle through and off the tail. Make sure you don’t pull too hard on the tail or the corner will look wonky.

Cut it off and you are done.

When you sew over this you’ll lock the tail in even more securely.

Sofia’s Fairy Tale

I have been meaning to blog this dress for months. As in since last Christmas when I made it for her.

It’s an Oliver + S Fairy Tale dress made up in baby cord, lined with a polycotton dotted lining in the bodice and acetate lining in the skirt.

The front bodice is cut in two pieces on the bias and to prevent that seam stretching I underlined the front bodice in a silk organza (yes for real). It doesn’t show up very well in this picture.

I found that wide, chunky lace at the florist’s of all places and I just knew I had to use it somehow in this dress.

The dress has been well loved, and the handsewn lace and lining is coming off in places after going through the wash so many times. I really should give it a touch up but I don’t think it will fit her for very much longer so I daly.

This is sadly the only picture I can find of her wearing it from last year. I ironed it just now since I was taking pictures of it so maybe she’ll put it on tomorrow.

Bubble Dress On Parade

20131006-165422.jpg

Can you believe I haven’t made this pattern before?!

This is going in the shop once I open it up again with a proper shop function in a week or two.

Too bad my girls are both too big for this pattern because it turned out so cute! And all from 3/4 yard of fabric. I had to get creative in my placement and I still had to cut the plackets separately.

But who cares?! That gave me the opportunity to put balloons on the placket. How cute is that?
